Sideboard, low & long

A restored walnut sideboard in soft afternoon light, against a cream wall

· The restoration

Four weeks, one coat of linseed oil after the next.

We found this sideboard in the spring, at an estate clearance. Walnut veneer, two sliding doors, simple turned legs — typical of the early 1960s, good German cabinetwork of the period.

The restoration took a few weeks. A small water mark on the top had to be carefully sanded away. The sliding doors ran heavily; the runners were re-oiled. At the end, a slow application of linseed oil, in several coats, by hand. A matte finish, no shine.

The piece is available. A viewing in Hamburg can be arranged on request.
